It happens many times that you have more devices that uses serial port interface to connect to your computer than the number of serial port you have in your computer. So what you do in such situation? You find yourself changing the port for the devices whenever you require to use one.  And this is quite a hectic job changing the devices every time you require them.

But now you have a perfect way out of this big time problem. You can now use the serial USB adapter or serial card to solve your problems. These both devices provides extra serial port to your computer but differs in the why they are attached to the computer.

A serial adapter is connected using the USB port of your computer. All you need to do is just connect the adapter to the USB port and serial port device to the adapter. This will enable you to use the serial port hardware using the USB port of your computer.

The serial card uses a different way than what the serial adapters used. Serial cards get directly attached to the motherboard of your computer using the PCI slots provided. Then you can plug your hardware to the serial connector of the serial card.
